The day my world turned upside down

The day my world turned upside down

My world was turned upside down 10 years ago! That was when I discovered my baby had life threatening food allergies.

I certainly didn’t see it coming. I suspected that food was related to my sons increasing eczema…. every time he ate, his skin flared up.

Unfortunately, my dermatologist didn’t take on board my opinion and I was told my baby would have eczema for life and all I could do was put steroids on him. When I suggested food may be the culprit, I was told I didn’t have a clue what I was talking about because I was ‘only a mum’!!!  Yes, he said that!!

Hmmm, I may just be a mum, but I was his mum and his voice! I am forever grateful that I listened to my inner voice instead of the proclaimed ‘expert’. I was lucky enough to find some amazing medical professionals who did listen and value my mummy instinct.  🙂

I think the best health care can be described as a partnership. Don’t you?

So, my instinct was right. My boy did have food allergies as I thought. I wasn’t quite prepared for just how many allergies he had though.

That shook my world!!!

He was only 12 months old when he was diagnosed with severe life threatening food allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, rice, corn, oats, eggs, dairy, soy, fish, chicken, potatoes, peaches, peas, mangoes and lupin!!!

Yikes, right?

That was over 10 years ago!! Before there were so many gluten free and allergy friendly products in the supermarket, long before ‘gluten free’ became trendy for some, long before there were so many online support groups. I felt like I was battling this all on my own.

It was a challenging time. Being geographically away from my mum made it more difficult. I was fortunate enough to have great support from my husbands family. However, I was extremely reluctant to allow my baby out of my sight. I’m sure I must have been unbearable at times, verging on paranoia.

What I needed was my tribe.  A group of other mums and dads going through the same challenges. That would have made things a whole lot easier. If you know what I am talking about, perhaps you are looking for your tribe, where you can offload, find support and encouragement, I’d like to invite you to

By the way, my boy has had perfect skin for over a decade. The only serious allergy he has now is to nuts. It’s been a huge journey, to say the least. I’ve learnt so much which is why I am so passionate to help other families. So passionate, that I am now a certified health coach specialising in allergic conditions.

While sharing tips and recipes can help in the short term, my approach is different to most allergy related websites, I help people address the underlying cause of illness which in turn, unlocks the keys to helping the body heal itself. We don’t have to put up with a life of suffering, healing from allergic conditions is possible. Just ask my son 🙂
